Correction: Abiotic Racemization Kinetics of Amino Acids in Marine Sediments

The ratios of d- versus l-amino acids can be used to infer the sources and composition of sedimentary organic matter. Such inferences, however, rely on knowing the rates at which amino acids in sedimentary organic matter racemize abiotically between the d- and the l-forms. Based on a heating experiment, we report kinetic parameters for racemization of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, and a...

The puri®cation of chlorins from marine particles and sediments for nitrogen and carbon isotopic analysis

Methods are presented for the separation of chlorins from marine particles and sediments for nitrogen and carbon isotopic analysis. Carbon and nitrogen purities of 91 and 96%, respectively, were obtained for particulate chlorins, with recoveries of 88%. Sedimentary chlorins were obtained with carbon and nitrogen purities of 88 and 89%, respectively, and recoveries of 18%. The reproducibility of...

Molecular and isotopic analysis of anaerobic methane- oxidizing communities in marine sediments

Convergent lines of molecular, carbon-isotopic, and phylogenetic evidence have previously indicated (Hinrichs, K.U., Hayes, J.M., Sylva, S.P., Brewer, P.G., DeLong, E.F., 1999. Methane-consuming archaebacteria in marine sediments. Nature 398, 802±805.) that archaea are involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane in sediments from the Eel River Basin, o€shore northern California. Now, further...

Lithium Isotopic Analyses of Chondrites and Chondrules

Introduction: Light stable isotopes provide insights and constraints on nebular and parent body processes. Lithium isotope studies of chondrites offer such potential, with some specifically unique aspects. Lithium is monovalent, the lightest of nongaseous elements, it has a 15% mass difference between its 2 isotopes (Li and Li), it is fluid mobile, and it is one of the fastest diffusing element...
